Institution: Trinity College Dublin

Year: 2024

Mira Rai Waits is an art and architectural historian at Appalachian State University, where she teaches courses on South Asian visual culture, the visual culture of the global city, and Asian and Islamic art and architectural history. Her research has addressed the visual culture history of fingerprinting in colonial India, the architectural and visual culture histories of British colonial prisons, and the role that remunerative labor played in the production of colonial Indian penology. For her Fulbright, Waits will study former colonial police buildings in and around Dublin in order to raise awareness about the ways in which police architecture was used to control formerly subjugated peoples. This research will comprise the first part of a new book project titled “The Station: Policing through Architecture in the British Empire,” which explores how police architecture contributed to the ascendance of colonial police forces and shaped their social purpose across empire.
