2016-2017 Fulbright Awards to Study, Research or Teach in the U.S. Now Open for Application

Monday, August 31st, 2015: The Fulbright Commission in Ireland today opened its competition for the 2016-2017 Fulbright Awards. These prestigious Awards fund Irish or E.U. citizens to study, research, or teach in the U.S. and are supported by a mature and global network. Applications are due by 4pm Friday, October 30th, 2015, more information can be found on www.fulbright.ie.
The Fulbright Awards are open to students, scholars and professionals in all disciplines including Engineering, Business, ICT, the Sciences and the Arts & Humanities.
In addition to the General Student and Scholar Awards for all disciplines, there are a number of specific and sponsored Awards available. Every year, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Awards fund successful candidates with fluent Irish, to teach the Irish language and enroll in courses in a U.S. college. There are also a number of Fulbright TechImpact Awards on offer. These awards fund short-term, non-commercial ICT projects or research in the U.S. across all disciplines. In addition, the Fulbright-University of Notre Dame TechImpact Scholar Awards based at the University of Notre Dame Centre for the Study of Languages and Cultures, fund research and teaching in Language Technology.
Fulbright sponsored Awards include: the Fulbright-Teagasc Award in the areas of Agriculture, Forestry, or Food; the Fulbright-EPA Award in the areas of water, climate change, and sustainable environment; the Fulbright-Marine Institute Award in the areas of Marine Science or Business; the Fulbright-Enterprise Ireland Award in the areas of Innovation; the Fulbright-CRH Award in Business Studies or Engineering; the Fulbright-NUI visiting Researcher Award for prospective or registered PhD candidates who hold an honours degree from a National University of Ireland Constituent University or other NUI member institution; and two law awards – the Fulbright-University of Notre Dame LL.M. Award in International Human Rights Law, and the Fulbright-University of Pennsylvania Law School LL.M. Award. This year the Fulbright Commission are delighted to have additional support from the Geological Survey of Ireland.
Under the Directorship of Dr Dara FitzGerald who recently joined the Fulbright team in July 2015, the Commission in Ireland offers exceptional support services and networking opportunities for successful awardees, in addition to funding.
Speaking about the Awards, Dr Dara FitzGerald, Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission said, “In promoting the 2016-2017 Fulbright Irish Awards, we want to reinforce the message that there are opportunities available for students, researchers and professionals across all disciplines to study, research and teach in the US with the Fulbright programme. We seek to actively reach out to institutions, centres and companies promoting the Fulbright opportunity. I am delighted that there is such a breadth of disciplines available for Ireland’s leading students and researchers. I would encourage all applicants who are interested in expanding their knowledge and expertise, sharing new experiences, and crossing cultural boundaries, to apply to become a Fulbrighter.”
The Fulbright Irish General Awards on offer are:
- Fulbright Irish Student Awards for Irish citizens or E.U. citizens resident in the Republic of Ireland for three or more years to complete postgraduate research for a period of 4-12 months in the United States.
- Fulbright Irish Scholar Awards for Irish citizens or E.U. citizens resident in the Republic of Ireland for three or more years to complete postdoctoral or professional research or lecturing for a period of 3-12 months in the United States.
- Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship (FLTA) awards for Irish citizens or E.U. citizens resident in the Republic of Ireland for three or more years with fluency in Irish to teach Irish and take courses at a U.S. college over the course of ten months in the United States.

Maoiníonn na Dámhachtainí clúiteacha seo saoránaigh Éireannacha nó saoránaigh ón Aontas Eorpach le dul i mbun staidéir, taighde nó teagaisc i Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá agus tacaíonn gréasán aibí domhanda leo. Tá na hiarratais dlite faoi 4pm Dé hAoine, an 30 Deireadh Fómhair 2015, agus is féidir tuilleadh eolais a fháil ar www.fulbright.ie.

Tá roinnt Dámhachtainí TechImpact Fulbright ar fáil freisin. Maoiníonn na dámhachtainí sin tionscadail nó taighde gearrthéarma neamhthráchtála TFC ar fud na Stát Aontaithe i ngach disciplín. Ina theannta sin, maoiníonn Dámhachtainí Scoláire TechImpact Fulbright-Ollscoil Notre Dame atá lonnaithe san Ionad do Staidéar Teangacha agus Cultúr in Ollscoil Notre Dame, taighde agus teagasc i dTeicneolaíocht Teanga.

Agus é ag labhairt faoi na Dámhachtainí, dúirt an Dr Dara FitzGerald, Stiúrthóir Feidhmiúcháin Choimisiún Fulbright “Agus Dámhachtainí Éireannacha Fulbright 2016-2017 á gcur chun cinn, teastaíonn uainn an teachtaireacht a threisiú go bhfuil deiseanna ar fáil do mhic léinn, do thaighdeoirí agus do ghairmithe ar fud gach disciplín chun tabhairt faoi staidéar, taighde agus teagasc sna Stáit Aontaithe le clár Fulbright. Déanfaimid iarracht ghníomhach dul i dteagmháil le hinstitiúidí, le hionaid agus le cuideachtaí a chuireann deis Fulbright chun cinn. Tá ríméad orm go bhfuil a leithéid de raon disciplíní ar fáil do na mic léinn agus do na taighdeoirí is fearr in Éirinn. Mholfainn do gach iarratasóir a bhfuil spéis acu ina n-eolas agus a saineolas a leathnú, i dtaithí nua a roinnt agus i dteorainneacha cultúrtha a thrasnú cur isteach ar thréimhse mar ‘Fulbrighteoir’.”

- Dámhachtainí Fulbright um Chúntóireachtaí Múinteoireachta i dTeangacha Iasachta (FLTA) do shaoránaigh de chuid na hÉireann nó an AE atá ina gcónaí i bPoblacht na hÉireann ar feadh trí bliana nó níos mó agus atá líofa i nGaeilge chun Gaeilge a mhúineadh agus chun cúrsaí a dhéanamh i gcoláiste i SAM thar thréimhse deich mí sna Stáit Aontaithe.
