Funding for U.S. Citizens to Study the Irish Language in the Gaeltacht

Thursday, 28th January 2016: Applications are now open for the 2016 Summer Gaeltacht Awards with a deadline of 28th February 2016. These awards, now in their 6th year, offer US citizens an unparalleled immersion experience in Ireland, where successful candidates will spend 2-6 weeks studying Irish in the Gaeltacht.

The courses not only offer language learning, but excursions, traditional Irish music and storytelling in some of Ireland’s most picturesque locations. Grants include tuition / fees as well as room (based on sharing) and board. Successful applicants must pay their own travel and living costs.

Applications are open to U.S. citizens who are learners and teachers of the Irish language and currently living or working in the U.S. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in an Irish language course in the U.S., have completed at least one semester of Irish language instruction, or have been teaching the Irish language in the U.S. at least one semester. They must also be able to participate in a program in its entirety (2-6 consecutive weeks during summer 2016).

Please note that these are not Fulbright Awards, but grants from the Ireland-United States Commission for Education Exchange, supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht and the National Lottery of Ireland.

Déardaoin, an 28 Eanáir 2016: Cuirtear fáilte roimh iarratais ar Dhámhachtainí Samhraidh Gaeltachta 2016 faoin spriocdháta, an 28 Feabhra 2016. Tugann na dámhachtainí seo, atá á mbronnadh den séú bliain anois, taithí tumoideachais in Éirinn nach bhfuil a shárú le fáil do shaoránaigh de chuid na Stát Aontaithe. Caithfidh na hiarrthóirí a n éiríonn leo idir dhá agus sé seachtaine a chaitheamh i mbun staidéir ar an nGaeilge sa Ghaeltacht.

Ní amháin go gcuireann na cúrsaí foghlaim teanga ar fáil, cuirtear turais, ceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann agus scéalaíocht ar fáil i gcuid de na láithreacha is deise in Éirinn. Áirítear táillí teagaisc agus eile leis na deontais chomh maith le seomra (a roinntear) agus lóistín. Caithfidh na hiarrthóirí a n éiríonn leo a gcostais taistil agus mhaireachtála féin a íoc.

Féadfaidh saoránaigh de chuid na Stát Aontaithe atá ag foghlaim agus ag múineadh na Gaeilge, agus atá ina gcónaí nó ag obair sna Stáit Aontaithe faoi láthair, cur isteach ar na dámhachtainí. Ní mór d’iarrthóirí a bheith cláraithe i gcúrsa Gaeilge sna Stáit Aontaithe, seimeastar amháin ar a laghad a bheith curtha i gcrích acu ag foghlaim na Gaeilge agus iad cláraithe ar chúrsa Gaeilge, nó ar a laghad seimeastar amháin a bheith caite acu ag teagasc na Gaeilge sna Stáit Aontaithe. Caithfidh siad a bheith in ann a bheith páirteach i gclár iomlán chomh maith (2-6 seachtaine as a chéile i rith an tsamhraidh in 2016).
