Dr Dara FitzGerald appointed as Executive Director of the Fulbright Commission in Ireland

Thursday 2nd July 2015: The Board of the Fulbright Commission in Ireland has appointed Dr Dara FitzGerald as the Commission’s new Executive Director.
Dr FitzGerald has a background in Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He has a BSc and PhD in Biology & IT from Maynooth University and University College Cork and has worked in IT and biomedical applications for 20 years.
Throughout his career he has been active in academic, Government and industry roles that have focused on driving Irish, U.S. and EU research through to solutions and products.
He has been founder and CEO of University spinouts PixAlert and OncoMark. He headed up BioResearch Ireland’s Imaging Research Group. Dr FitzGerald has provided support for a number of spin-out and scaling companies, was a Business Partner with Enterprise Ireland and has worked for the National Digital Research Centre helping to commercialise academic research.
In 2007-2009 he acted as the US Federal Liaison for Enterprise Ireland and was based in Washington DC and Dublin, working with the agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Agriculture and Department of Energy.
Dr FitzGerald brings a wide range of sectoral, management and innovation experience to the Fulbright Commission.
Dr FitzGerald said of his recent appointment to the Fulbright Commission: “I believe that by working with the Fulbright Commission I will once again be able to operate at my best with a great team, great ethos and truly top-class Fulbright family. I expect to share in the enthusiasm, energy and worth that the Commission brings.”
The 2016-2017 Fulbright Award application period opens on Monday, August 31st, 2015. Interested applicants in all disciplines are encouraged to visit the Fulbright Commission’s website, www.fulbright.ie, for more information. All applications for the 2016-2017 academic year will be due on Friday, October 30th, 2015.
