First-ever TEDxFulbright Takes Place in Dublin
Speakers Share Ideas on How to be Happier, Healthier, and More Inspired
Sunday, April 6th, 2014: In advance of World Creativity and Innovation Week, TEDxFulbrightDublin took place on Saturday in Smock Alley Theatre with the theme of “Creativity and Innovation.” Hosted by the Fulbright Commission, speakers and performers from around the world, including Sweden, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom, came to reveal their “ideas worth spreading.”
TED, which started in 1984 as a conference on Technology, Entertainment, and Design, seeks to share good ideas on all topics through short, but contagious, talks. TEDx is the platform for local organizers to create their own TED-style event.
TEDxFulbrightDublin was conceived by Dr. Lorcan Walsh, a Fulbright Alumnus who went to Harvard University, to reconnect with the wider Fulbright community and to reach out to others to share and spread creative new ideas. Speaking about TEDxFulbrightDublin, Walsh said, “Although TED Talks have just celebrated their 20th birthday, TEDxFulbright events are a relatively new phenomenon. Just two have taken place in the past and this is the first to ever occur in Ireland. I am delighted to bring this incredible event to Dublin and to showcase the brilliant ‘ideas worth spreading’ to Ireland and further afield.”
TEDxFulbrightDublin hosted a number of innovative and interesting speakers, including Kevin Owens, a Fulbright Alumnus and the Design Principal for the London Olympics. Owens stated, “As a designer, TEDx is a brilliant way to showcase new ideas – not only can one share them with the guests in the room, but soon after these ideas will be streamed to thousands, if not millions, of viewers online. TEDx truly is an innovative way for all of us to learn, collaborate, and grow in the new digital age.”
The full schedule of talks and performances, which will soon be online at www.tedxfulbright.org/dublin, was as follows:
– Charlotte Blease: Hypocritical Oaths – Medicine’s Dirty Secrets

Notes to Editor:
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California in 1984, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives.
At a TED conference, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende, and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
On TED.com, talks from TED conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talks videos. A new TED Talk is posted every weekday. Through the Open Translation Project, TED Talks are subtitled by volunteers worldwide. Through our distribution networks, TED Talks are shared on TV, radio, Netflix, and many websites.
The TEDx initiative grants free licenses to people around the world to organize TED-style events in their communities with TED Talks and live speakers. Selected talks from these events are also turned into TED Talks videos.
The annual TED Prize grants $1 million to an exceptional individual with a wish to change the world. The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. TED-Ed creates short video lessons by pairing master teachers with animators, for use in classroom instruction or independent learning.

An chéad TEDxFulbright riamh ar siúl i mBaile Átha Cliath
Roinneann cainteoirí smaointe linn maidir le conas a bheith níos sláintiúla, níos sona agus níos spreagtha
Domhnach, Aibreán 6ú, 2014: Roimh Sheachtain Domhanda na Cruthaitheachta agus na Nuálaíochta, cuireadh TEDxFulbrightDublin ar siúl in Amharclann Scabhat Smock agus ‘An Chruthaítheacht agus an Nuálaíocht’ mar théama aige. D’óstáil Coimisiún Fulbright, cainteoirí agus taibheoirí ó gach cearn den domhan, an tSualainn, na Stáit Aontaithe, agus an Ríocht Aontaithe ina measc chun ‘Smaointe ar fiú iad a roinnt’ a chur i láthair.
Moladh: An Coimisiún Fulbright atá á chur ar siúl, agus tháinig cainteoirí agus taibheoirí ó gach cearn den domhan, an tSualainn, na Stáit Aontaithe, agus an Ríocht Aontaithe ina measc, chun ‘smaointe ar fiú iad a roinnt’ a chur inár láthair.
Tháinig TED ar an bhfód in 1984 mar chomhdháil dírithe ar an Teicneolaíocht, ar an Siamsaíocht agus ar an Dearadh. Tá sé mar aidhm ag TED smaointe maithe maidir le hábhar ar bith a roinnt trí chainteanna gearra suimiúla. Tugann TEDx an deis d’eagraithe áitiúla a n-imeachtaí féin i stíl TED a chruthú.
Ba é an Dr. Lorcan Walsha a cheap TEDxFulbrightDublin, Alumnus Fulbright a chuaigh go hOllscoil Harvard, chun ateagmháil a dhéanamh le pobal mór Fulbright agus chun daoine eile a mhealladh lena smaointe nua cruthaitheacha a scaipeadh agus a roinnt le chéile?) Dúirt Walsh agus é ag labhairt i dtaobh TEDxFulbrightDublin; “Cé gur cheiliúir TED a 20ú breithlá ansin le déanaí, feiniméan nua go maith iad imeachtaí TEDxFulbright. (Moltaí: Cé gur ceiliúradh breithlá 20 bliain TED le déanaí/Cé gur le déanaí a bhain TEF an scór bliain amach, feiniméan nua go maith iad imeachtaí TEDxFulbright.) Ní raibh ach dhá cheann ann roimhe seo agus is é seo an chéad cheann riamh in Éirinn. Cuireann sé gliondar ar mo chroí a bheith in ann an t-imeacht seo a thabhairt go Baile Átha Cliath, chun smaointe iontacha ar fiú iad a roinnt a chur i mbéal an phobail, smaointe a bhaineann le hÉirinn agus leis an domhan mór.”
D’óstáil? TEDxFulbrightDublin roinnt mhaith cainteoirí suimiúla, Kevin Owens ina measc, Alumnus Fulbright agus an duine a bhí i gceannas ar chúrsaí dearaidh do Chluichí Oilimpeacha Londain. D’fhógair Owens, “Mar dhearthóir, is bealach iontach é TEDx le smaointe a chur i mbéal an phobail – ní hamháin gur féidir leat na smaointe a roinnt leis na haíonna sa seomra ach go luath ina dhiaidh sin cuirfear na smaointe ar an idirlíon, áit a mbeidh rochtain ag na sluaite orthu. Is fíor gur bealach nuálaíoch é TEDx dúinn uile chun foghlaim, chun obair i gcomhar le daoine eile agus chun fás sa ré nua digiteach.
Beidh sceideal iomlán na gcainteanna agus na dtaibheoirí ar fáil ar line go luath amach anseo ag www.tedxfulbright.org/dublin . Seo a leanas mar a bhí an sceideal:

Nóta don Eagarthóir
Eolas faoi TEDx. X= ócáid atá eagraithe go neamhspléach
Agus ‘na smaointe sin ar fiú iad a roinnt’ ar intinn againn, clár d’imeachtaí áitiúla agus féineagraithe atá in TEDx chun daoine a tharraingt le chéile leis an taithí uathúil seo a bheith acu. Ag imeachtaí TEDx, tugtar físeáin ‘TED Talks’ agus cainteoirí beo le chéile chun plé agus ceangal éifeacht a spreagadh. Tugtar TEDx ar na himeachtaí áitiúla féineagraithe seo; an bhrí leis an X ná: ócáid atá eagraithe go neamhspleách. Tugann Comhdháil TED treoracha ginearálta ar fáil do chláir TEDx, ach grúpaí aonair a dhéanann na himeachtaí neamhspleácha TEDx seo (faoi réir rialacha agus rialachán áirithe).
Eagraíocht neamhbhrabúis is ea TED a chaitheann dúthracht le ‘smaointe ar fiú iad a roinnt’. Thosaigh sé ina chomhdháil in California sa bhliain 1984, agus tá go leor tograí curtha le chéile ó shin ag TED chun tacú leis na smaointe seo; smaointe gur féidir an domhan a athrú.
Ag comhdháil ar bith de chuid TED, iarrtar ar phríomhsmaointeoirí agus ar phríomhghníomhairí an domhain buaic-chaint a saoil a dhéanamh taobh istigh de 18 nóiméad. Ar na cainteoirí a bhí ag TED go dtí seo tá Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende, agus iarPhríomh-Aire na Ríochta Aontaithe, Gordon Brown.
Ar TED.com, déantar cainteanna ó chomhdhálacha TED a roinnt, saor in aisce, leis an domhan mór mar fhíseáin ‘TED Talks.’ Cuirtear caint TED nua in airde gach lá. Tríd an Tionscnamh Oscailte Aistriúcháin, cuireann oibrithe deonacha ar fud an domhain fotheidil le ‘TED Talks’. Tríd na gréasáin dháileacháin atá againn, roinntear ‘TED Talks’ ar an teilifís, ar an raidió, ar Netflix, agus go leor suímheanna eile.
Tugann togra TEDx cead a gcinn do dhaoine ar fud an domhain imeachtaí ar dhála TED a eagrú ina bpobal féin le cainteanna TED agus le cainteoirí beo. Chomh maith, roghnaítear cainteanna áirithe óna himeachtaí seo agus déantar ‘TED Talks’ díobh.
Bronntar duais TED, ar fiú $1 milliún, ar dhuine ar leith gach bliain agus é de mhian aige nó aici an domhan a athrú. Cuidíonn clár chomhalta Fulbright le nuálaithe idirnáisiúnta atá ag iarraidh an domhan a athrú bheith mar chuid de phobal TED, agus cuireann an cuidiú seo leis na tionscnaimh agus na gníomhachtaí iontacha atá ar bun acu. Déanann TED-Ed ceachtanna gearra físeáin trí shármhúinteoirí a chur le cúntóirí, le húsáid le teagasc ranga nó foghlaim neamhspleách.
