Irish Student Numbers Rise 9% at US Colleges
US Students Studying in Ireland Grows at Same Rate
Monday, November 11th, 2013: The 2013 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, released today, finds that Irish students studying in the United States increased by 9.3% percent over the past five years to 1,158 in 2012/2013. Americans coming to Ireland were also up by 9%, with nearly 7,700 studying here in 2011/2012. The report, published by the Institute of International Education, saw the total number of international students at colleges in the US increase by 7% to a record high of 819,644 students in the 2012/13 academic year, while US students studying abroad increased by 3% to an all-time high of more than 283,000.
Northeastern University in Boston finds itself at the top of the pack for Irish undergraduate students again this year. However, the rest of list has changed substantially since 2012, with Duquesne University, Boston College, Mercyhurst College, and the University of Scranton rounding out the top five. The most popular graduate institutions have remain relatively unchanged, with New York University, Columbia University, the University of Notre Dame, Harvard University, and Cornell University leading the way for postgraduates.
Commenting on the figures, Joanne A. Davidson, EducationUSA Manager for Ireland, stated, “it is no surprise that the number of Irish students studying in the US has grown this year. Competition is fierce for places in Ireland and with the holistic application process used by US colleges many students find that their best fit university is actually abroad. I except that numbers will continue to grow, with students looking to diversify their CVs and expand their experience in order to prepare for a challenging job market when they come back home.”
