August 25th, 2013: Fulbrighter Shares Experience of Visiting the United Nations
Karen Devine, an Irish Fulbright Scholar from Dublin City University, attended the One to World 2013 Fulbright Awards Dinner on Wednesday, May 22nd 2013 at the Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, and helped out the One to World Staff in greeting attendees. Three fellow Fulbrighters, Cristina Gonta from Molodova/Romania, Elmir Gurbanov from Azerbaijan, and Alfdaniels Mabingo from Uganda introduced the evening’s honorees, Isaac Shapiro, Gianluigi Esposito, and Susan Carmel Lehrman, by drawing on their own inspiring stories of becoming Fulbrighters and what it meant for each of them.
Devine was thrilled to have met the late Senator Fulbright’s wife, Mrs. Harriet Mayor Fulbright, at the awards dinner with fellow Fulbrighters Niklas Elofsson from Sweden and Saida Radjabzade from Uzbekistan. The successful and enjoyable evening raised over $600,000 for One to World programs and events for next year’s visiting Fulbrighters.
One To World brings together visiting Fulbright Scholars and Students with Americans – one to one – to share similarities and appreciate differences in order to build cultural understanding across the globe. Some of the outstanding One to World events Devine attended during her Fulbright visit at Columbia University in New York included a play, “Dispatches from America,” an Election Panel of five speakers at NYU, a visit to the United Nations, and a Council on Foreign Relations talk.
