What's on offer?

  • Each year the Fulbright Commission awards scholarships to Irish citizens and or EU citizens resident in Ireland for 3 years or more, for post-graduate study, research and teaching in the United States.
  • The Commission also awards scholarships to US citizens for post-graduate study, research study and teaching in Ireland.
  • Fulbright Awards include a monetary grant, visa administration, accident and emergency insurance and cultural and professional programs.
  • Candidates are selected through an open, merit-based competition with final approval from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington, DC.

Categories of Awards:

General Awards open to applicants September 12 months in advance of an academic term. The current awards for 2012-13 are now closed to applicants. The next round for 2013-14 will open in September 2012.

Student Awards

  • for applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree and intend to enrol on a US Masters or PhD degree program or conduct independent research (minimum 6 months) as part of an Irish or European PhD program.
  • The awards are only available for one academic year but students may remain in the US for the full duration of their academic program if it is greater than the year.

Scholar Awards

  • for post-doctoral researchers, academics or professionals with more than 5-7 years experience in any discipline including the visual and performing arts, to spend 3-12 months researching and or lecturing in the US.

Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Awards

  • postgraduate students / recently qualified teachers with competency in the Irish language to spend one academic year as a teaching assistant in the US.

Irish Language Scholar Awards

  • for candidates with a PhD in a relevant Irish language discipline and substantial Irish language teaching experience at third level or candidates that are outstanding independent scholars or authorities in the Irish language to spend 3-12 months teaching the Irish language, providing curriculum development support and researching a US institution's Irish language resources.

The following Awards have different application timings:

Fulbright Schuman Awards

  • 3 – 10 months for research, post-graduate study or lecturing in EU affairs or US-EU relations for Post-graduate students, scholars or professionals.
